Time for a change?

Have your say: proposed council name change to include Botley and change from Parish to Community Council:

As part of the Vale of the White Horse District Council’s latest community governance review, North Hinksey Parish Council have submitted a request to change our name to include Botley and to change the style of Council from Parish to Community. You can submit your thoughts on these proposed changes in an online survey here.

Why change?

  • The proposed change to include Botley in our council name is to better reflect the community that the council serves. Most residents refer to the area as Botley and often think of North Hinksey as just the village part of the community. Including Botley and North Hinksey in the council title we thought better represented the whole community.
  • We have also requested to be a Community Council instead of a Parish Council. In England, a parish council can call itself a community council, as an ‘alternative style’ under the Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act 2007. Other alternative styles are neighbourhood and village. Parish councils wherr there is desire to make a
distinction from an ecclesiastical parish, may choose one of these alternative styles introduced by the 2007 Act. Our Council voted in favour of proposing Community Council.

You can make comments on the Community Governance Review during the engagement period running from Thursday 31 March to midday on Friday 29 April 2022.

Once the survey closes, the Vale will collate all responses and present them in a report, alongside other relevant data, to the Community Governance and Electoral Issues Committee. They will consider the responses and then put forward draft proposals for further consultation later this year.

Following a second consultation, the Committee will consider responses and agree whether or not to implement the proposed changes. The second consultation is expected this summer, with the Committee meeting shortly afterwards to make their decision. The aim is to implement any changes agreed so that they apply in time for the May 2023 elections. More information is available on the Vale website.
